A Tale of a Carbon Monoxide Detector!

So we have a combo smoke/carbon dioxide detector in our apartment; actually several of them placed strategically around the dwelling.

Well, this afternoon, after turning on the gas oven for a brief period to warm a couple of slices of pizza, the alarm began to blare. We have a household burglar alarm system that sensors such warnings, and thus the alarm company and the local fire department called us within a couple of minutes.

Well, turns out that the gas range was emitting CO in an amount considered dangerous by the detectors. After visits by the maintenance people and the local gas company, we learned the appliance was defective, and will have to be replaced. Good to know, because, if we didn't have the detectors, a few cooking sessions could have created a dangerous situation here.

Just a few words to the wise: Many of those detectors just sense smoke. If you have gas appliances, you want CO capability too.
