    The Mac Clone Controversy Rears Its Ugly Head

    Yes, everything old is new again. This week we hard the story about a certain Florida IT company that is evidently planning to sell home-built Intel-based computers that will supposedly run Mac OS X Leopard.

    Now before I tell you more about the alleged clone, let’s go back in time to the last decade and explore some of the previous Mac cloning attempts, both official and otherwise.

    Back when the original Mac Portable was oversized and underperforming, a third-party company came up with the Outbound Portable, a nine-pound note-book that used real Mac ROMs to provide a genuine Apple user experience and run the latest system software. Evidently they got around a possible Apple intellectual properly lawsuit originally by requiring the owner handle the ROM transfer process.

    For a while, Outbounds were embraced by thousands of Mac users looking for a better portable computing experience, until the real PowerBooks came along and essentially sent the imitation out to pasture.

    Later on, after being urged for years to clone the Mac, Apple did it officially, and the short-lived Mac OS compatible industry was born. Alas, perhaps because the contracts were badly written, such clone startups as Power Computing went after Apple’s own core customers with a vengeance. They basically put a genuine Mac logic board into a cheap PC box, with accompanying components, and undercut Apple big time on pricing and performance.

    When Steve Jobs arrived, he put the kibosh on this misbegotten enterprise, and the question of cloning didn’t arise again until Apple switched to Intel processors. Aha, thought some PC power users! Now it would be easy as pie to run Mac OS X on a home-built PC box, and they did try it, here and there. For the time being, Apple merely tolerated the practice, since the cloning wasn’t being done by a real company marketing a real product that held the promise of being Mac compatible.

    The other day, I read the report about a Florida company, PsyStar Corporation, touting their Open Computer, an Intel-based PC that starts at $399.99 but apparently is more powerful than the $599 Mac mini, though not nearly as small or as easy on the eyes. In fact, PsyStar’s computer very much resembles a standard PC, which surely brings back memories of those official Mac OS clones of yesteryear.

    By the way, if you have a problem getting to the site, please bear in mind that they’ve been slammed with traffic since the announcement came out. Evidently the promise of a cheap Mac clone is appealing to lots of you, even its highly unlikely that Apple will allow this company to sell the product for any length of time.

    In any case, here are the specs for the entry-level box:

    • 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 Processor
    • 2GB of DDR2 667 memory
    • Integrated Intel GMA 950 Graphics
    • 250GB 7200RPM SATA hard drive
    • 20x DVD+/-R SATA drive that is Lightscribe-capable
    • 4 rear USB Ports

    Now let me remind you that a real Mac mini has Mac OS X Leopard installed, and includes FireWire. If you want to add that to the Open Computer, it’s another $205, though Leopard is installed free. Don’t they call that bait and switch?

    So for an actual purchase price of just $5 more than a Mac mini, you get a speedier processor, a larger, faster hard drive and a superior optical drive. That, of course, omits iLife ’08, which is an extra $79, plus a genuine Apple product warranty and what is regarded as the best support in the PC industry.

    However, you can also enhance the Open Computer to include a discrete NVIDIA graphics card, a 2.66GHz processor and an even larger hard drive.

    I suppose this does demonstrate that you can take the core components of a Mac and assemble them in a cheap PC box and undersell Apple. But Apple’s EULA prohibits installing Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware. That’s something that PsyStar cannot get around. If they actually attempt to distribute this product, it would seem sensible for Apple to take appropriate legal steps to get an injunction and stop this venture cold.

    I’m sure the folks at PsyStar, who claim to be ready for Apple’s legal eagles, are aware that the chances of victory are slim to none. But that won’t stop them from getting their fifteen minutes of fame. Rest assured that the chances of Apple allowing a new clone program aren’t in the cards in the foreseeable future either.

    This doesn’t mean Apple shouldn’t allow cloning. But it would have to be done in a way that doesn’t cannibalize Apple’s extremely profitable computer business, and that’s going to be a difficult issue, one that Apple is obviously not willing to tackle right now.


    The Leopard Report: Slower than Windows XP?

    The other day, I read an article in Daniel Knight’s usually excellent LowEndMac site, in which he interviews musician and artist Scott Hansen, a devoted Mac user who is willing to overlook alleged performance limitations with Mac OS X because he still thinks it’s far, far better.

    So what performance limitations are we talking about? Well, according to Knight, Hansen has benchmarked Photoshop on a fully decked out system running Windows XP and Mac OS X, and found the former is measurably faster. However, he still reports that Mac OS X runs far more reliably.

    According to Knight, Hansen’s “conclusions are sure to disappoint some Mac partisans.”

    I’m disappointed, all right, but not in the subject’s conclusions, such as they are. I’m more upset by the lack of journalism Knight exhibits in writing this article. Whenever you publish something about benchmarks, it’s always a good idea to be as specific about the methodology as possible, particularly when the test results seem at odds with other published reports.

    Take, for example, this one, in which Photoshop CS3 is evaluated in four ways in a new MacBook. Here, Boot Camp and virtual machines are used to run Windows XP. Even in Boot Camp, where the Mac runs Windows as fast as any dedicated PC of comparable specs, Mac OS X runs Photoshop CS3 faster, and a fair amount faster as a matter of fact.

    Now of course different benchmarking techniques may yield differing results, so it’s fair to say there may be some trials that give Windows XP the advantage, and I’ll grant that.

    Unfortunately, Knight doesn’t tell us anything about Hansen’s tests that so impress him. And before you ask, yes, I sent two emails over the weekend asking for an explanation and further details. One even included a link to the tests that revealed a decidedly different result. There were no responses.

    One extremely troubling aspect of this story is the fact that Hansen apparently ran these trials on his own custom-configured overclocked 4.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Quad-Core Extreme system. In other words, the test computer’s innards weren’t all built by Apple, but were heavily-altered in ways that may certainly yield unpredictable results.

    In describing the process, Hansen concedes, “I have no idea what I’m talking about,” and I would agree wholeheartedly. Worse, severe overclocking can heavily compromise the longevity of the system, resulting in overheating and shortened component life. That to me is not an optimized Photoshop computer, but a time bomb waiting to explode.

    Besides, Apple already has a computer that’s optimized for high-end content creation. It’s called the Mac Pro, and it doesn’t require tricked up processors or other silliness to deliver excellent performance.

    Even forgetting the questionable choice of a production system, when you run benchmarks of this sort, you carefully select the test methodology to provide heavy-duty rendering functions, say, with a large photograph. That way, you wouldn’t be dealing with possible differences of tenths of a second that might challenge your stopwatch or whatever you use to time the runs.

    Additionally, it’s a good idea to restart the computers after each trial, to make sure that everything is as pristine as possible. Running other applications at the same time is a no-no. What’s more, timed runs need to be repeated at least two or three times to remove the possibility of anomalous results. You then average the figures to get as accurate a measurement as possible.

    Well at least he seems to have been running Photoshop CS3, to his credit, though it’s not at all clear which version of Mac OS X was used. I’ll grant, however, that Tiger and Leopard would probably yield fairly similar results regardless.

    Of course, what I’m writing is just plain common sense. Even then, there are reasons why one might criticize the resulting benchmarks, perhaps suggesting that different combinations of Photoshop filters might favor one platform or the other. I accept that as well.

    In fact, all things being equal, I would actually have expected Mac OS X and Windows XP to be fairly close in terms of ultimate performance potential. Windows Vista is another story, and almost every test I’ve seen shows it runs applications slower. No wonder Microsoft is having one hell of a time selling upgrades, and tens of thousands of Windows users are begging them to keep XP alive longer, and not just for a handful of cheap note-books.

    However, I can see where this poorly researched article is going to appeal to Windows diehards who are absolutely begging for evidence their chosen platform is superior to the Mac. They have certainly lost the argument about Macs costing more, when identically equipped, although that fiction is still being repeated to the level of total exhaustion. And, no, I’m not going to argue the point here. I’ve done that so often that I’m tired of the discussion, at least for now.

    Now perhaps Knight was looking for a fast headline to generate some hits, though I always considered him to be a pretty careful reporter regardless. I also hope that he and Hansen will explain themselves a little further so we can see just what’s going on here.

    Newsletter #437 Preview: Tell Me Apple: Why Did You Do That?

    You most likely know that the newest iteration of the MacBook Pro uses Intel’s powerful and energy-saving Penryn processors. You also know that some of the touchscreen tricks from the iPhone and MacBook AIr have been transplanted to the touchpads of the MacBook and MacBook Pro.

    Adding the Multi-Touch feature allows you to, for example, pinch your fingers to reduce text size in a supported application and to expand them — all on the touchpad of course — to increase the size. Yes, I suppose the touchpad, which has not changed in size, may be a mite small to really exploit such a feature, but you just know that it’ll grow larger perhaps in the next product refresh.

    That would seem to be sufficient to provide a decent upgrade to continue to move lots and lots of Mac note-books into homes and businesses, and Apple could have stopped there.

    But it appears that Apple wouldn’t give up making changes. They did a few more things, some of which you might not be particularly enamored of.

    The Great Search for Mac Software

    Do you remember the good old days, when there was virtually no Mac software at any local computer shop? Well, you’d think, what with Mac sales going through the roof, you’d find a rich selection at such dealers these days.

    But expectations and realities are far, far apart these days.

    Consider those hundreds of Best Buy electronics stores, where there are special areas for Apple products. You go there and you’ll be lucky if you find a few dozen common titles, such as Adobe’s Creative Suite, Office for the Mac and, of course, Apple’s own applications.

    But what about an Apple Store, you may ask?

    Well, visit any of them, even the flagship stores, such as the ones in New York City, and you’d expect to see hundreds of products from which to select. True, the variety is much greater, but it doesn’t even begin to reflect the wide scope of Mac applications that are now available.

    Now I do remember all those complaints from Windows diehards over the years that there was no software for the Mac, or very little, and I resented it, because I was able to find a pretty good choice, at least for the stuff I wanted. But you didn’t find it at the local store. No, you had to get a Mac mail order catalog to find the products you wanted, and this was before you could easily download most of your favorite applications from the publisher’s own site.

    Nowadays, if you check Apple’s own online Macintosh Products Guide, you’d be amazed to find that there are over 20,000 to choose from. At one time, Apple would list the actual number, but it has grown too fast to keep up.

    Understand we’re talking of a lot more than simple shareware here. There is a growing selection of the significant vertical applications that are required to run such businesses as legal or medical offices. Indeed, some of the publishers who abandoned the platform years ago are back with a vengeance.

    But where do you find these products, other than Apple’s catalog, which, in turn, sends you to individual thousands of sites to get more information and place orders?

    Well, it won’t be those classic Mac catalogs. You see, the costs of paper and printing have gone through the roof, and so they concentrate largely on high ticket items, such as new Macs, high definition TVs and other gear. Software gets short shrift, often at the back of the book, as it were. This doesn’t mean they don’t have much available. If you actually write or call the mail order merchant, you’ll probably be able to order lots of products that aren’t listed, or just do a little searching at their sites.

    From the standpoint of the software developer, this makes sense, though it’s highly unfortunate. You see in the old days, those multipage listings for a single item were subsidized by the publisher, who paid a huge sum to the catalog house to get a preferred listing, plus giving away half of the gross revenue. For a large company, that’s just the cost of doing business. But for the tens of thousands of small publishers with tiny staffs, it’s the difference between survival and failure.

    This doesn’t mean you can’t find those products. Other than Apple’s own listing, there’s MacUpdate and VersionTracker, two sites that are essentially software aggregators that list new products and product updates, and make it easy for you to find the applications and system enhancement and maintenance utilities you want.

    However, Apple already has a better solution, if they choose to extend it to Mac software. It’s the App Store, the place where you’ll be able to buy officially-approved applications for your iPhone when it debuts in June. It’s a one-stop shopping mall, where software developers will give Apple 30% of the take in exchange for not having to handle individual transactions and fight for product listings. Every month, they simply get a check. It doesn’t mean they can’t — or shouldn’t — promote their stuff separately, but it’s certainly a useful way to sell their stuff. That assumes that, like the iTunes store, Apple won’t exert draconian censorship except for common sense reasons, such as products that just don’t work or represent a potential security hazard.

    Wouldn’t it make sense for Apple to add a software department to iTunes as well?

    This doesn’t mean they have to get the exclusive, any more than they have exclusive rights to most of the movie and music product they feature now. But it’ll be solace to the software publisher that fights to get noticed. That, plus a selection of favorable customer reviews, will help the unknown but compelling new application get its day in the sun.

    It will also make it possible for Mac users to have a one stop shopping source for software they may have not previously considered.

    With a greater opportunity to make a living, it will also help attract more developers to the Mac platform, which means we’ll see more of those potential killer apps that are so sadly lacking now.

    In fact, the idea makes so much sense I really wonder why Apple hasn’t set it in motion. Or maybe we’ll see a surprise of this sort later this year at the WWDC. What do you think, readers?
