    Will Apple Be Forced to License Mac OS X?

    Over the years, tech columnists and “industry analysts” have been clamoring for Apple to open up Mac OS X. By in the 1990s, when it seemed the company could do nothing right, they actually complied, with a Mac OS compatibility program that included licensing basic hardware reference designs.

    The hope and dream was to expand the Mac marketplace into areas where the company had not succeeded before, including the entry-level arena. Now I don’t know all the specifics of the contracts, but what happened was precisely the reverse. Aggressive startups such as Power Computing actually went after Apple’s core market of content creators with a vengeance that was, in retrospect, incredibly wrong-headed.

    True, Power Computing simply wanted to sell boxes, and what they built were essentially Macs packaged in cheap PC form. Because their production quotas were far lower than Apple’s, they were able to install faster chips first, long before production quotas were adequate for the mother ship.

    What’s more, the innards of their boxes could be disasters, and I recall my original PowerTower Pro, for example, where the hostile chassis layout inevitably gave me lots of bruises whenever I tried to swap out a hard drive, or add RAM.

    When Steve Jobs returned to Apple as part of the deal to acquire NeXT, one of his first acts after taking control was to make the lives more difficult to Mac clone makers. Just before he pulled the plug entirely, I recall one Macworld Expo where Power Computing adopted a bunker mentality. Their reps wore battle fatigues and Army vehicles were included in the exhibit.

    I can bet Jobs went ballistic over this, and it wasn’t long before he handed the remnants of Power Computing a check to shut them down, and took over their fabulously efficient online ordering system. That became the core of today’s Apple online store.

    You have to believe Jobs was thoroughly jaded over the value of operating system licensing then and there, and you can see how Apple adopted more and more vertical solutions through its entire product line in subsequent years.

    Today, in fact, Apple’s growing success may be partly due to the fact that they build the whole widget, and can offer products as close to plug and play as you can get these days.

    However, as you may have expected, once Apple migrated to Intel processors, software hackers went to work inducing plain PCs to run Mac OS X. Mind you, reliability might have been wobbly, and there were probably peripheral driver issues to cope with, but it could work.

    When folks managed to do the reverse, which was to allow Windows to run in its own partition on a MacIntel, Boot Camp followed within weeks, followed shortly thereafter by the first public betas of Parallels Desktop and the ride began at full speed.

    So once again, Apple is being urged by people that I regard as highly uninformed to allow Dell and HP and other PC makers to offer Mac OS X as an option on some of their computers.

    The theory is laudable, to be sure. They’d like to see Apple compete directly with Microsoft, with the hope that the Windows hegemony would begin to dissipate.

    I expect the shouts will be louder now that the issue of Microsoft unbundling Windows is being debated in Europe, but, as my article on the subject clearly stated, alternatives to Windows, other than Mac OS X, are simply not viable in a variety of situations.

    However, the larger issue is that the people who are most vocal about Apple opening up Mac OS X could use some remedial math training. If you spend even a few casual moments looking over their financial statements, you’ll see they earn the lion’s share of their profits from the sale of hardware. Sure, some software products, such as iLife and iWork, plus the professional audio and video applications, do bring in a nice piece of change, not to mention Mac OS X upgrade kits.

    But nowhere do those revenues match what Apple can earn from the sale of new Macs. To make up that income, they’d have to move huge numbers of Mac OS X retail kits to compensate, and that’s by no means a certainty. It would, in fact, be a huge risk to take, considering that plain PC boxes would — as Mac OS clones did over a decade ago — cannibalize Apple’s sales big time.

    Just as bad, Apple would have to make Mac OS X compatible with thousands and thousands of new system configurations — including home-built boxes — rather than the small number of Mac systems they support.

    In other words, this could be one huge disaster for Apple. It could, of course, happen some day if the industry situation changed substantially from what it is today. But I wouldn’t take any bets.


    Should Microsoft Be Forced to Unbundle Windows?

    I don’t know whether you realize this or not, but whenever you buy a PC, you are also paying for a copy of Microsoft Windows. It doesn’t matter whether you use it or not, or whether you wipe the drive and install your favorite Linux distribution. It doesn’t matter what you want. You still have to pay the dreaded “Microsoft tax.”

    How much? Well, that varies from PC maker to PC maker, depending on the quantities they buy and the particular configurations they choose. I’ve heard $40 for a basic OEM license, however. This may not seem like an awful lot of money, until you multiply that figure by tens of millions. Even forgetting the far-higher cost of buying a Windows upgrade kit at your local computer, it all ads up to billions of dollars.

    In fact, Microsoft makes roughly 81% profit from Windows. What a racket!

    Well, now a European think tank, known as Globalisation Institute of Brussels, is asking the European Commission to order Microsoft to unbundle Windows from new PCs. That would mean you’d only pay for Windows if you really wanted a copy. Otherwise, you can buy your PC naked, without an operating system and install whatever x86 compatible system you want. Or have it ship to you with a different operating system, but that opens a real can of worms.

    Since Microsoft isn’t faring terribly well at the hands of the European authorities, this possibility ought to be taken seriously. However, even if such a demand were made, Microsoft could stretch out the process for many years what with stonewalling, legal challenges and all the usual tricks a multinational corporation can play to avoid facing the music.

    Before I analyze the possibilities, I know some of you are going to wonder why Apple wasn’t mentioned in the same breath, since you can’t buy a Mac without Mac OS X. However, the situation is quite different, since Apple’s market share is roughly 3% worldwide, whereas Microsoft’s is well over 90%.

    So you can see where there’s an incentive to end Microsoft’s lock-in deals with PC makers and somehow force them to compete on a level playing field. The problem arises, of course, as to what choices a PC maker can offer instead of Windows. Obviously, there is no Dell operating system or HP operating system, to cite two obvious examples. To be sure, I call these companies PC box makers or assemblers because all they really do is pick various components from the same parts bins, and package them with a somewhat distinctive case bearing the manufacturer’s logo.

    Then they install a hard drive image that includes Windows, plus whatever junkware they’ve been bribed to include, and ship the boxes to retailers or customers.

    If Windows suddenly isn’t a requirement, where do they go? It would take these companies years to build their own operating systems, with no guarantee of success, so they’d probably look towards a suitable Linux distribution. The only thing is that Linux isn’t necessarily so friendly to novice users, without lots and lots of careful packaging and advance configuration.

    Yes, Dell does offer some systems with Linux preloaded, and HP is experimenting with a similar option. They might work well out of the box, but flexibility is rather limited. As soon as you stray beyond the default setup, you are almost certain to encounter problems with peripheral drivers. If you must use a Windows application, you may need to look for, say, an Office substitute, or be forced into the world of virtual machines.

    And then you’re back to installing Windows, unless you use WINE, the open source software on which CrossOver Mac is based. That lets you run some Windows applications without Windows.

    As far as I can see, of course, this reduces the prospects for mass market acceptance of Linux.

    Some suggest unbundling Windows would give Apple a golden opportunity to sell retail Mac OS X boxes that’ll run on any ordinary PC. Maybe, but Apple makes the lion’s share of its Mac profits from hardware, not software. They offer a vertical solution, with the hardware and software designed to work well together.

    Even if Apple could sell enough copies of Mac OS X to cover lost revenue from people who choose a PC box rather than a Mac — and that’s going to be awfully difficult — they’d confront the same chaotic compatibility issues that Microsoft must deal with. Instead of just working with a small number of carefully configured systems, Mac OS X would have to run on thousands and thousands of different PCs, many of which are home-built from spare parts acquired, perhaps, through a local computer outlet.

    Unfortunately, such consequences aren’t always obvious to the tech commentators who think Apple should do its own unbundling. Maybe they are too young or they have forgotten the near-disaster of Apple’s first and final effort to license Mac OS X. It nearly killed the company.

    Sure, maybe those licensing deals were badly negotiated, but that’s not where Apple is going these days. With sales of new Macs reportedly running at record levels and then some, there’s just no upside for Apple to sell its operating system to PC users.

    In the end, unbundling Windows may result in very little change, at least on the short term. The options available to PC makers are few and not at all suitable for many of their customers. Indeed, the entire effort may be a gigantic exercise in futility.


    Newsletter #408 Preview: Time to Talk About Leopard’s Successor Yet?

    If all goes as planned, Leopard will reach the DVD pressing plants in a week or two and arrive in the stores before the end of October. Sure, nobody knows for certain when until the official statement from Apple that the Golden Master version has been declared.

    For now, I’ll assume that Apple will meet its promised goal. I have no inside information to present, and I will take the reports on the rumor sites that the GM is near with a grain of salt. On the other hand, if there are a few lingering bugs of any seriousness, Apple may simply get 10.5 out the door speedily, and then fix the rest with a fast follow-up involving a 10.5.1 and a 10.5.2.

    Once the release hits the store shelves, you’ll read lots and lots of commentary over how well it does, and depending on the timing, we hope to have one of the first reviews that weekend. I’m guessing that it’ll probably ship with a special event on a Friday evening, and I would submit it’ll happen on October 19th or 26th. How’s that for an iron-clad prediction? I’m leaning towards the latter, by the way.

    No, I won’t take bets, and I’m not using tea leaves. It’s just a feeling, and nothing more, but I prefer to concentrate on such things on our paranormal radio show, rather than in a tech column.

    Hopes and Dreams for the Leopard Finder

    Just the other day, while recording an interview with Mac author and commentator Kirk McElhearn, we both ruminated about the fate of the Mac OS X Finder in Leopard. I think most of you agree with us that the present Finder is severely broken, and has been from the first.

    No, I’m not talking about the basic interface, because I think that’s pretty much in good shape. I’ve always found the column view a convenient way to check your stuff and drill down into deeply-nested menus. There are times, of course, when I prefer list view to reorder file display and such, but the basic layout gets the job done.

    We could, of course, talk of ways that things might improve, particularly when it comes to the Open and Save dialog boxes, where features that were pioneered years ago in such products as Default Folder and Super Boomerang, such as automatic rebounding to the last opened file, are still missing in action.

    It’s not that such tweaks represent an insurmountable problem for Mac OS X, since Default Folder has remained compatible with each operating system upgrade all these years. However, Apple’s online documentation for Leopard fails to mention any such enhancements, so I’ll assume that, aside from taking on some of the more distinct elements of the Leopard interface, the Open and Save dialogs will remain largely untouched. Sad, but true. But at least the publisher of Default Folder can continue to sell the product without competition from Apple. Our kudos to programmer Jon Gotow for his great work in making Default Folder such an indispensable tool.

    Maybe he deserves a job at Apple, or maybe that’s the farthest thing from his mind.

    As to the Finder itself, the prospect of grafting cover flow from iTunes affects me hardly at all. It’s neat to look at if eye-candy is your thing. But I prefer to see lists of the files I want to open, not pretty pictures that will simply put the brakes on my Finder navigation process. But that’s a viewing scheme that is optional, so you can do what you want, and if you like the effect, then maybe Apple was right to include it. Of course, once I have the chance to really use Leopard, maybe I’ll change my tune, but I doubt it.

    My real concerns for the Finder are far more mundane. I want it to work efficiently, without bogging down. Now that may not seem to be such a demanding request, but when you look at every single version of the Mac OS X Finder, you’re apt to think it’s an impossible accomplishment. Sure, it’s gotten a little better over the years, but when you see it in action in a quad-core Power Mac G5 or Mac Pro — let’s not worry about the eight-core version of the latter — you will be astounded how bad things can be.

    Consider a very simple action, which is to copy the same 10GB folder to two other drives for backup. This is something I do regularly with my stash of audio interview files. And it doesn’t matter if the drives are internal or external, but let’s just say they are real fast mechanisms

    The first symptom you’ll observe is that the Finder has apparently been struck by a severe case of flu, for it becomes extremely sluggish. You try to open an application during this file copying process, and the launch sequence seems to take minutes, rather than seconds.

    If you have the temerity to try to open a Finder window and look over a few things, watch out for the spinning beach ball, because it can get to be mighty frustrating.

    Now consider network access. Apple touts its cross-platform capabilities, but watch what happens when the file share falls off the network for any reason. It doesn’t have to be a crash. Say you’re sharing files with your MacBook and the note-book drifts into sleep mode. The Finder will take its sweet time figuring that out and then some. During that period, you may think the Mac that’s connected to that MacBook has, itself, fallen asleep or perhaps crashed till things clear up, as they do eventually.

    Admittedly, a MacIntel seems to be a better home for Mac OS X, and the slowdown isn’t so severe. In fact, my dual-core MacBook Pro with 2GB of RAM outshines the G5 quad, with 4GB of RAM, in that regard. But the PowerPC is history, so I suppose I shouldn’t fret over that. An Intel-based desktop is on my shopping list, and one of these days, I’ll act.

    But I’m not saying anything here that Apple doesn’t know. Indeed, I have little doubt that Apple wants the Finder to, once again, become the showpiece of the Mac user experience, which means that speedy performance and efficient multithreading should be a given.

    Will it happen in Leopard? I can’t make any predictions, nor do I want to know what’s going on with the beta process, since that’s protected by Apple’s confidentiality agreements. Besides, any experience one has with prerelease software, good or bad, doesn’t always follow completely through to the final release.

    Let’s just say that I’m extremely optimistic that Apple gets it, and, further, that we will see many of our hopes realized when Leopard is released.
