The One Paragraph Mac OS 10.4.11 Report
November 14th, 2007Are you ready to write Tiger’s epitaph? Well, despite the fact that Wednesday afternoon’s release of the Mac OS 10.4.11 updater represents the last major update for that system, there will most likely be security fixes from time to time. As usual, the latest Tiger maintenance release has a slew of changes, some of which are security related, and you can get a pretty full picture with from Apple’s online document on the subject. You’ll also notice that the Safari 3 update is part of the package, which spells doom for older Safari add-ons. In addition, Apple released an updated Safari 3 beta for Windows, plus a number of updates — some Leopard-related — for its professional multimedia applications. Indeed, the Soundtrack Pro 2 patch, which takes that audio application to 2.0.2, fixed an annoying file saving problem I had encountered since installing Leopard. And, yes, we know Apple’s 10.5.1 update is out, and I’ll have more to say about that in Friday’s commentary.

Safari 3 is quite a different engine. I know of a few apps that use the web browser as part of the app and since safari 3 it is well and truely broken. These are a few specialized text based apps
Acrobat Pro and Adobe Reader both crash within seconds of launch under 10.4.11. Anyone else?
Same in Leopard. It is a known issue by Adobe Acrobat. They are working on it and expect an updated version by December 2007.
Fortunately Inquisitor still works with the final Safari 3 on 10.4.11.
Huh??? I upgraded to Leopard the first day it was released, and because of my current work project I’ve had Adobe Reader up and running virtually all the time since then. Yesterday I upgraded my wife’s G-5 to 10.4.11, I just test-launched Reader on her Mac and it works just fine. I have no idea about Acrobat, but Reader seems entirely problem-free on both 10.4.11 and Leopard.
10.4.11 works perfectly for me.
For me Safari became unusable after I installed the 10.4.11 updater. I could read my RSS feeds, but whenever I tried to see all my bookmarks, it crashed. Also whenever Safari was called from mail.app, Safari crashed. I’ve reverted to 10.4.10 by way of the backup I made before installing the 10.4.11 updater.
Why in the world would Apple explore totally new territory (this new version of Safari) in what is presumably the final upate of Tiger? It seems totally unnecessary to risk the screwups that have occurred.
Since the 10.4.11 & Safari update, gmail on Safari has been atrocious, especially using the address book. No problems on the latest Firefox, though it is very slow on my G4, as before the OS update. Others?

I installed it on my granite G4 and it totally freezes on the splash screen! I don’t know how to back out of this. I need my G4!
Two bugs I have so far found in 10.4.11 are in Mail and Safari. When I move mail messages to another folder, normally the pull-down menu gives me the repeat option of what I just did. Now the pull-down is eternally stuck on repeating a “copy.” Gmail in Safari is messed up and now stretches across 4 screens when I type.
The latter strikes me as really, really odd. In 10.4.11, you have Safari 3, which I used in its beta form for a while before I went to Leopard, and I never ran into any such difficulty. I should point out, though, that we use Google Apps for all our sites, which includes Gmail, and I never saw the particular symptom you describe.
Maybe you should post a screens shot? Anyone else?

I have a strange one. Meaning its difficult to detect. My Mac book Pro(with 0s 10.4.11) asked me to reinstall photoshop CS2. I installed Photoshop on another computer to test it and it installed fine.
With the help of kb.adobe.com,I fixed permissions using disk utility) and I was able to open photoshop once again on my laptop. But encountered
the same problem. It stated because of a serious problem it wanted photoshop reninstalled.
What is wrong with my laptop, and how do I fix it?
You say you reinstalled Photoshop on another computer to test it. What about the MacBook Pro?

Thanks for writing back.
I reinstalled Photoshop on the Mac Book Pro and that’s the one that is giving me the problem.
The other (imac) installed without a hitch. So I don’t think the photoshop cd’s are damaged. Other software on the Mac Book Pro seem unaffected leaving me baffled.
Do I need to reinstall systems?
Do you know of a way to check the system?

i have 2 desktop macs and 2 mac laptops. i have installed 10.4.11 successfully on both my g4 desktop macs. however, i have tried to update both laptops (a g3 ibook and an intel macbook) to 10.4.11 from the software update menu and both have failed!!! i am now going to reinstall both and upgrade to 10.4.10 as i know they both worked fine before…
is this an issue that other people have experienced recently?
If I catch you in time, maybe you should first try the combo update from Apple’s site. It’s rather large, and encompasses all the updates from 10.4.1 on. Quite often when an update doesn’t go well, that helps.
But before we get to that point, just what do you mean by “failed”?

I would first manually remove the Photoshop CS2 files, including the ones in the Application Support folders, along with preferences, and try again.

thanks for your comment. when i mean failed i mean the apple sign comes up goes through the start up progress bar and completes that and then goes into a darwin welcome message. this then hangs with a blue screen.
saw mac genus chap at the mac store, regent street today who told me it was a software error and to reinstall.

Yes, at that point I would definitely recommend a system reinstall. And if you want to try the 10.4.11 upgrade again, use the combo updater.
